Dear Parents,

School is closed on Monday, October 14th for Columbus Day. Enjoy your day off!

Last week we finished up our unit on farm animals. We learned about the animals on the farm such as pigs, sheep, cows and ducks. We also played educational, interactive animal and number recognition games on the smart board. To date, we’ve learned how to recognize and sound out the letters “A” for Apple, “F” for Farm, “D” for Duck, and “B” for Bats. We’ve learned the colors red, yellow, and brown. We’ve also enjoyed playing in the sensory bin which was filled with beans and farm animals.

This week is all about pumpkins! We will learn about the color orange and we will do an experiment to show how mixing red and yellow gives us orange. The children will learn the letter “P” for pumpkin. They will learn how to recognize, sound out, and trace the letter “P.” We will read “The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin” and a few other short stories. In addition to pumpkins, we have a few fun spooky Halloween crafts in the pipe line to make to decorate our classroom and the hallways for Halloween.

The two nursery classes will join together on Thursday to make pumpkin bread. Each child will get to bring home a piece of pumpkin bread on Friday.

During centers, the children will continue to practice tracing by tracing shapes and their names. We will also continue to work on cutting scrap paper to strengthen our cutting skills. A new sensory bin will be introduced this week filled with green rice, orange pumpkins, and fun spiders.

During religious instruction this week, the children will learn all about the birth of Isaac. Pastor taught the children the song “Good is so Good” and we plan to surprise him by singing it in Spanish as well. This week, Mrs. Maldonado will join our class to teach them how to sing it in Spanish, “Dios es bueno”. We will continue learning this prayer at snack time:

Thank you God for our food so good.
Help us do the things we should.
Amen

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We ask all students to wear PINK on Wednesday, October 16th, to raise awareness about Breast Cancer.  We will be selling ice-cream on Wednesday afternoons and ice-pops on Friday afternoons, for $2 each, during mid-day and afternoon dismissals to raise money to donate to Sloan Kettering for cancer research. We hope you will participate in our fundraiser by purchasing some. The message we are teaching this month, and always, is that we are all more alike than different and we should treat all our friends with kindness.
