First of all, thank you to everyone who came for Back to School Night. It is always a pleasure seeing and speaking to all of you, and I hope that together, this will be a fantastic year for your children.

In addition to the regular academic program, the extra activities will be starting soon. Several students have asked if I will be sponsoring the Film Club again, and yes, I am. However, due to its popularity last year, I will be spitting it into two semesters. If your child signs up for the fall session, I would ask that he or she consider another club for the spring, just to give everyone a chance. I will send home a permission slip in the coming weeks.

8th Social Studies

This week we are studying my favorite part of the Civil War- the battles that solidified the Union victory. We will be looking at the Battles of Gettysburg and Vicksburg, along with the some-what controversial March to the Sea, led by Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman. To help reinforce the lessons, the students will be looking at a few primary source documents, and they will also have the opportunity to act out a skit based on the Battle of Gettysburg. Since we have reached the end of the war, the tentative date for the Chapter 15 test is Wednesday, October 1st. I will post a link to the study guide later this week, so check back!

8th Pre-Algebra

In Pre-Algebra the students have finished the lessons in Module 1. There will be a test on Friday. For the remainder of this week, the students will be doing some review work, and we will be working on deciphering word problems.

8th Religion

This week in Religion, we are continuing to study the remarkable life of Abraham, specifically his prayer to save Sodom & Gomorrah, and the almost sacrifice of Isaac. While these events happened thousands of years ago, there are still many things that we can learn from Abraham’s faithfulness and obedience to God. The memory verse for this week is Psalm 19:14, which is not from the student book, so you may find it here. I selected this verse not only because it is one of my favorites, but because it holds a good reminder that we need to be more aware of our words and actions.

Have a blessed week!
