“I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made straight and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it together.”

– Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Hello, everyone! I hope all of you had a fantastic weekend and took time to remember the legacy of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Did you know that he and his father changed their names to Martin Luther after being inspired by the work of THE Martin Luther? Just a piece of trivia to ponder. As I have said many times to my classes, we should be thankful for all of the leaders of the Civil Rights movement and thankful for living in a more equal society today. Now for the news for this week….

Homeroom

– All Middle Schoolers and their friends are invited to attend the Fuel Olympics this Friday evening 7:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. We will have all kinds of games, events, snacks, and even prizes!

8th Social Studies

This week the students will continue with Chapter 19. They will be learning about reformers who were seeking equal rights for women and minorities. Many of the modern reformers still cite the men and women of the 19th and 20th centuries as their inspirations. In addition to the regular lessons, the students will also present their projects they have worked on in class regarding the 1912 presidential election. The students have created campaign speeches, posters, jingles, and even commercials for the assigned candidate (T. Roosevelt, W.H. Taft, or W. Wilson). The students will then vote for the candidate with the best campaign.

8th Math

This week the students are reviewing Module 5, in which they learned how to make equations for graphs, tables, and other data. There will be a quiz on Module 5 on Thursday, January 22nd. I will have extra help Thursday morning. On a related note, the students have made so much progress this quarter, and I am very proud of them! I hope they keep up the effort for the remaining months of the school year.

8th Religion

This week the students will finish their study of Samson, and then look at the life of Ruth. Ruth was not actually an Israelite, but God blessed her richly and her legacy is one that we should look upon as an example of faith and obedience. The memory verse for this week is Philippians 2:13, which is on page 59, or may be viewed here.
