 OUR NATION’S CAPITOL

Eighth Grade is a year of privileges and milestones: dances, graduation photos, caps and gowns, trips, Regents Exams, and ultimately graduation from Trinity. One such milestone is the class trip to our nation’s capitol, Washington, D.C. There was much anticipation and excitement leading up to the main event, and the trip did not disappoint. In a matter of only two days, we managed to visit 12 different sites and monuments!

On our first day, we began our excursion with a guided tour of the Washington National Cathedral. The students were exceptionally taken with the stained glass window, especially the Space Window, which contains a stone from the surface of the moon. In addition to the beautiful art and architecture, we also paid our respects to prominent Americans who are interred there including President Woodrow Wilson, Helen Keller, and Anne Sullivan.

Later that day we made our way to the heart of Washington, D.C., to take some pictures in front of the White House and visit many of our nation’s important monuments. The students were especially impressed with the magnitude of the Lincoln and Martin Luther King Jr. Memorials. We also paid our respects to our nation’s fallen soldiers at the Korean and Vietnam War Memorials.

The second day of our trip was just as jam-packed. We began the morning by heading across the Potomac River to visit Arlington National Cemetery. While at Arlington we visited the gravesites of the Kennedy family, and visited the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers. While there, we not only got to see the changing of the guard, but also a special ceremony to change the wreath on the tomb.

After our moving experience we headed back into Washington to visit a few museums. Our first stop was the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, where we visited an exhibit entitled Daniel’s Story. We listened to a first hand account of one young man’s experience of surviving the Jewish ghettos of Poland and ultimately surviving the Auschwitz and Buchenwald concentration camps. Our next stop was the Bureau of Printing and Engraving, where we learned all about how our paper money is created and manufactured.

Our last museum stop was the American History Museum at the Smithsonian Institute where we got to see the flag that inspired Francis Scott Key to write The Star Spangled Banner, the inaugural gowns of each First Lady, film memorabilia, an exhibit on the Civil Rights Movement, and much more.

Late Friday afternoon, our whirlwind excursion to Washington, D.C. came to an end as we headed back to Long Island. This trip is sure to be one of the many highlights of eighth grade that the students will carry with them for years to come.
