We have been learning about “Our Community” in class. We discussed the places we go, the people we meet and now, this week, we will learn about the special vehicles that our community helpers drive in our community. Our vocabulary words for this week are: driver, passenger, safety, traffic, transportation, travel and vehicle. As we complete this unit of study, we will end with a group project in which we will draw our community (complete with all the places, people and vehicles) on bulletin paper together. We are also still interested in hosting parent volunteers to present their careers to the class.
In conjunction with learning about our community, our activities this week will help us to better understand letter Ii, the basic colors and shapes, and we will explore the question, “What is a pattern?” as a math concept. Our Voyages religion lesson this week is, “David and Johnathan are thankful for friends.”
As Thanksgiving draws near, we will also be focusing on giving thanks for the harvest. We will learn a little about the history of the first Thanksgiving and of the importance of the corn crop to both the survival of the native Americans and the English in America. We will explore the life cycle of corn, pound corn with a mortar and pestle, create mosaic art out of colored corn kernels, bake corn bread with fresh churned butter, and enjoy fresh popped kettle corn among other fun activities.
