January is a great month to talk about all things cold. We have been learning in science about the different states of water, solid, liquid, and gas, and also about what makes ice freeze and melt. We conducted some experiments to see what would happen when we put water in the freezer, and how would could make snow melt fast. We are also learning about animals in Winter. We are discussing migration and hibernation, as well as animals that live in polar regions.

Our social studies will focus this month on community helpers. We have learned about how our parents are community helpers, and what kinds of jobs they have. This past week we also spent some time learning about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and how he wanted everyone to be kind and love each other. We made a handprint project to represent love for one another. This coming week we will be spending some time talking about the inauguration of our new president.

One of the stories we read this week was The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats. The story connected to our project in art class that we will be working on for two weeks. We will use different mediums to create a Snowy Day picture.

After Christmas we learned about the Wisemen coming to visit young Jesus with their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. We also learned about the woman in the temple Anna who prayed to see the Savior. We will continue this month during Jesus time learning about how Jesus grew as a little boy.

For music and movement, we will be learning some new winter songs and movements including My Snowman, Freeze and Melt, and Building a Snowman.

Please remember to sign up for parent/teacher conferences on the sheets outside the classroom. Please talk to your child’s teacher if there is a conflict as it is very important that we have the opportunity to discuss your child’s progress with you.

Have a blessed week.
