We are off to a great start to the year, and I imagine our first full week of classes will be just as great! Here are the updates for this week.

6th Religion

On Friday, we began our first lesson on Creation, and the students had really good questions and comments as we studied Genesis, so I am looking forward to our classes this week. We will finish the lesson on Creation and the fall into sin, and then we will study Adam and Eve’s sons, Cain and Abel. Sadly, they mark the beginning of generations of family drama, that is resolved and fulfilled in Jesus. Then, we will study the Great Flood. The memory verse for this week is Romans 5:10. The quiz is on Friday and the students can study from the Google Classroom.

6th Social Studies

Just as we are studying the beginning of civilization in Religion, we are studying prehistory in social studies. We will learn about the theories of the first humans, and then how they migrated to populate the earth. As I told the students, this is a time before written records, so much of what we are studying in this unit is a theory and has not yet been fully proven as fact.

7th Religion

On Friday, we talked about who God is through the context of God caring for Elijah during his time running away from Jezebel. This week we will look at the different characteristics of God, and how we can learn more about God from His Word. The Bible stories that will guide us this week are Paul preaching at the Areopagus in Athens (where he actually uses Greek philosophy to prove his point!), and the story of Abram and Sarai being promised a son, Isaac. The memory verse for this week is 1 Corinthians 12:3 and the quiz is on Friday.

7th Social Studies

Last week, the students began learning about the earliest cultures of Central and South America, and this week we will study the tribes and culture groups that developed in North America. Next, we will talk about how customs from Africa, Asia, and Europe have shaped American culture and government.

8th Religion

On Friday, we started studying creation and the fall into sin. We will finish up that lesson and then move on to the Great Flood and the Tower of Babel. The overarching theme of all of these lessons is the fact that since Adam and Eve, humans have been in rebellion against God and that is why we need a Savior. The memory verse for this week is Matthew 4:16 and the quiz is on Friday.

8th Social Studies

In social studies this week, we will study the election of Abraham Lincoln and the official start of the Civil War. We will watch a portion of Ken Burns award winning miniseries, The Civil War, to better get a picture of how life was affected and how secession spread almost like a virus through the South. Then, the students will begin their first research project of the year on Union and Confederate generals. They will present their projects in class next week.
