Happy early Valentine’s Day to one and all! This year Valentine’s Day is very special, because it is also Ash Wednesday, a day when we reflect on just how deeply God loves each one of us, and that out of love, He sent His Son to die for us. However, this is also a week of testing, as the students will be taking the Terra Nova exam, so our class schedule will be a little different. On that note, here are the updates for this week.

6th Religion

On Monday, we will finish the final lesson of unit 3, which will tell the story of Elijah standing up to King Ahab and Queen Jezebel one last time when they essentially killed a man named Naboth to take his family vineyard. On Tuesday, the students will work on the review for unit 3, and they will have their test on Friday. After our break, we will begin our unit on Holy Communion, which will not only review our Bible lessons and explore what we believe as Lutherans, but will also prepare our students who are members of Trinity Lutheran Church to take their first communion on Maundy Thursday.

6th Social Studies

This week the students will be working on projects researching several African Kings and Queens. They already studied the monarchs of Ancient Egypt and Kush, so we will be looking more at the Kingdoms of Eastern and Western Africa, beginning with Mansa Musa.

7th Religion

The lessons we will be covering this week are really digging deep into God the Father’s love for us. We will look at what the Bible says about heaven and hell, and then we will study what makes people so special. Due to the testing schedule, there is no memory verse this week.

7th Social Studies

On Monday, the students will present their projects on prominent African American government officials throughout U.S. history. Then, we will begin studying George Washington’s presidency, and the precedents he set as the first president.

8th Religion

This is a week off from the exercise study, so the students will have religion this week. On Tuesday, they will be presenting their Calling All Workers projects, then we will study Saul, Israel’s first king. Again, due to schedule changes, there is no memory verse.

8th Social Studies

To follow up our study of World War I and to celebrate Black History Month, the students will be researching and presenting projects on important African American military leaders. They will present their projects on Friday. After the break, we will begin our unit on the Roaring Twenties and the Great Depression.
