Hello, everyone! I hope all of you had a relaxing Labor Day weekend. We are going full steam ahead in all of the classes. Here are the updates for this week:

7th Social Studies

This week the students will be learning about the earliest cultures of North and South America. We are starting with the Mayas, Aztecs, and Incas. From there we will continue to the cultures of the continental United States. The students are learning about what made each culture unique and how each group adapted to its environment. They will also be working on an art project related to the early written language of the Mayas.

8th Social Studies

We are just starting the Civil War this week in 8th grade. The students will be studying many primary sources as we go through this unit. Did you know that this was the first war to ever be photographed? In addition to photos we will also be reading journal entries and historical newspaper articles. Toward the end of this week, the students will be looking at the “new” technology of the Civil War and the leadership of each side.

8th Pre-Algebra

In Pre-Algebra the students are learning about different types of numbers, rational and irrational. They are also learning how to use their calculators to find the square and cube root of numbers. However, as I told the students, they should nit become dependent upon their calculators, because many high school entrance exams do not allow the usage of calculators.

8th Religion

We are starting from the very beginning: Genesis 1, Creation. From there we will progress through the rest of the book of Genesis. The next major topic will be the Flood. The memory verse for this week is Matthew 4:16a, which can be found on page 9 of the student book, or here. The quiz will be on Friday.

Have a wonderful week!
