Happy Monday! This is the first Monday that we are together at school, and it is a beautiful fall-like morning. I have several updates for all of you, so I will get right into them.

8th Social Studies

This week we continue with our study of the Civil War. For the majority of the week, we will focus on personal experiences of those affected by the war- soldiers, wives, mothers, politicians, slaves, et cetera. Due to the timing of the Civil War, we have an abundance of primary sources to give us first-hand accounts of what really happened. The Civil War Archive website is an excellent source that I will be utilizing this week.

7th Social Studies

In Seventh Grade Social Studies, we will be wrapping up our study of Native American culture groups, and moving on to other cultural influences on American government and society. We will be studying the government traditions that we adopted from the Greek and Roman civilizations, as well as the influence of Christianity and other major religions. To lead into the next chapter, the students will study the early European and Islamic explorers, and learn why the people felt compelled to travel so far away from home.

8th Pre-Algebra

This week the students will be wrapping up Module 1, and will have their first quiz at the end of the week. The final lesson of the module will combine all of what they have learned and will focus on comparing numbers using order of operations. It was brought to my attention that the math website, my.hrw.com, requires a sign-in. The students may create an account for themselves to access the online version of the textbook as well as the supplemental resources. They will need to have the book in hand, and they will have to enter the ISBN number in order to register. Another excellent source for extra help is the Khan Academy. you can just search for the topic of study and they will have instructional videos and extra practice available.

8th Religion

In Religion class, the students will continue to work through the Book of Genesis. We will finish talking about the Great Flood and will move into the Tower of Babel and Abram/Abraham being called by God. The memory verse for this week is 2 Corinthians 10:17-18, which can be found on page 13 in the student book, or here. Since there are not many homework assignments given in Religion, it is especially important that the students are well prepared for their Memory Quizzes each week.

Have a wonderful week, and please feel free to email me if you have any questions or concerns.
