Greetings! We are in the last to weeks of the second quarter, and we therefore have much to complete before January 22nd.

8th Social Studies

To start this week, the students will be working on a group project in class. Last Thursday and Friday the students studied the Progressive Presidents, and the highly controversial 1912 election. This week, the students will create campaigns for the three 1912 candidates (Presidents T. Roosevelt, Taft, and Wilson) that would fit in with the year 2016. They will then vote and see if they can rewrite history. 😉 Toward the end of the week, the students will learn about how women gained political rights and they will study the early African American civil rights leaders. There will be a test on chapter 19 next Friday, January 22nd, which will coincide with the end of the quarter.

7th Social Studies

In seventh grade social studies, we are on the brink of the American Revolution. The students will learn about the early skirmishes and battles of our war for independence. As a special treat, we will view an episode from the series, Liberty’s KidsLiberty’s Kids tell the story of the Revolution from the perspective of young people. It is not only entertaining, but also gives an accurate depiction of history. As the students finish chapter 5, they will begin working on the chapter review, but they will also work on a Document Based Question, which will be the essay portion of the test. Seventh grade will also take their chapter test on Friday, January 22nd.

8th Pre-Algebra

The pre-algebra class is wrapping up Module 6, the study of using functions, and will take the module quiz on Tuesday, January 12th. There will be extra help that morning. From there, we will begin Module 7, which will first focus on solving equations with variables on both sides of the equation. Once again, the students will continue to build upon skills they have been learning all year, and will dive deeper into algebraic equations.

8th Religion

This week we are studying the era of the Judges of Israel. We will begin with Deborah and then move on to Gideon and Samson. Each of these men and women were selected by God and were given great gifts, but were also deeply flawed human beings. We will analyze the strengths and weaknesses of each. The memory verse for this week is  Isaiah 6:8, which can be found on page 57 of the student book.
