Thank you to all parents who were able to attend Back to School Night, a success because of you! It was a pleasure meeting with you and discussing the year ahead! This past week was a busy one! We continue to review first grade skills and begin to build upon them.
English Language Arts
Reading Authentic Literature
• We continue to read our novel study, Herbie Jones Sails Into Second Grade by Suzy Kline. While doing so, we will draw conclusions, predict, review adjectives, verbs, and nouns, learn about similes and onomatopoeia, discuss the prefix -un, cite evidence, discuss cause/effect, make inferences, find context clues, and talk about character traits
•We talk about what reading and listening look and sound like (reading finger following along, eyes in book or on teacher, ears listening)
Writing Personal Narratives- a work-in-progress!
• Writing the “big idea” and details in order to tell a story about your life (a summer memory)
Grammar Punctuation and Capitalization in statements and questions
Phonics
•Short a and i review
•beginning/medial/final consonant review
Handwriting “Keys to Legibility” including size, shape, spacing, and slant -review of manuscript begins
