Reading Language Arts

Reading: We continue our novel study of Herbie Jones Sails into Second Grade

•story elements such as characters, setting, problem, and solution

•vocabulary words and their meanings

•character traits

•sequencing of story events 

Phonics Focus

•initial, medial and final consonants in words

•short a,e,i,o,u vowels and their word families

Writing

•poetry/writing journals-fall poems and October writing prompts

•writing good sentences that make sense, making sure our sentences have punctuation and capitalization

Grammar

•review of nouns, plural nouns, verbs, adjectives

Handwriting

•review of the keys to legibility: key elements to focus on in order to make sure our handwriting is legible as we sharpen our manuscript skills

•developing fluency with addition using mental math strategies (doubles/doubles plus one, fact families)

Important Information and News: 

We welcome Mrs. Bumpass and Mrs. King as our class parents for the school year. We thank you for volunteering. They will be contacting you in regards to donations for our fall/pumpkin second grade celebration being held on Monday, October 31.

This week we will have our first Mystery Reader! The children will be given 3 clues to guess who it might be! We welcome our Mystery Reader to our classroom on Wednesday and look forward to a great story time.

I will be collecting $10 per student for party supplies. A note will be sent home soon.

•Homework Please encourage as much independence as possible when completing homework. Homework is expected to be done neatly. The children will be writing their assignments in their planners. Kindly initial their planner each night. Take Home Folders will need to be emptied every night as well. Thank you!

•Please order online for October hot lunch as well as for weekly Friday pizza. Pizza envelopes will no longer be used.

•Snack should be sent in daily as well as a refillable water bottle.

•Please label all uniform sweaters with your child’s name
