From the time your child is born, you have probably wondered how you can help your child be more successful in school.  One of these ways is to have your child develop good Reading Skills.

Here are some tips on how to make reading times with your child more enjoyable and help develop some early reading skills.

*  Let your child choose a book which interests him/her and read along with him/her.

*  If your child struggles with a word, tell him the word, then make a note to go over these words at a later time.

*  Have your child read a book over and over to encourage fluency, even if this means that your child “memorizes” the story.

*  Read a sentence aloud and have your child model after you.

*  Ask questions as you go along in the book which require that your child think about the story.  Ask  “What do  you think the author means?” or “How do you feel about what the character did?”.  This will allow your child to make judgments and think about aspects of the story.

*  If your child seems to be losing his/her place on the page, use a marker above and below the line they are reading to help keep their place.

*  When is it time for your to seek outside help?  If your child rubs his/her eyes, complains of headaches after reading or squints when reading,  these might be signs of an eye problem that needs to be addressed by a professional.  Another red flag is your child telling you that the words are jumping around the page.  This might be the time to see your pediatrician.
