It is never too early to motivate your child to enjoy learning.  There are some strategies that parents can use to help their child meet their potential.

*  Demonstrate how important reading is.  Read to your child before they can read independently.  Set aside a time for reading for the family.  Provide a good role model-have your child see you enjoy reading.

*  Encourage your child to express themselves-their likes, dislikes, opinions.  Ask probing questions to encourage your child to think deeply.

*  Allow your child to make choices.  Don’t let it be open-ended, especially when the child is young.  Give two or three choices-“Do you like the blue shirt or the green one?”  Allow the child to make the decision.

*  Provide opportunities for outside interests, but be sure it is an activity your child really enjoys.  Avoid over-saturating your child with activities; leave opportunities for free time.

*  Help your child be organized especially with their school necessities.  This will eliminate a mad rush to meet deadlines, find missing items, etc.  Being organized will help avoid your child being stressed.

*  Talk to your child-at the dinner table, in the car, at any opportunity.  Develop a good means of communication so when the real important issues come up your child knows they can come to you.

*  Above all, support your child.  Be enthusiastic about not only the big accomplishment, but the little ones, too.  Let your child know you are proud of them.  This will help build their self-esteem.
