Making Homework Fun

We are now more than half way through the first quarter!  Here are some suggestions for making homework less stressful.

  •  In reading, have your child read one page and you read the next.  Your child will work on reading and auditory skills at the same time.
  •  Put reading and vocabulary words on flashcards and practice five at a time.
  • Kinesthetic learning- Have your child do something, like drawing, to learn.  Have them draw a picture, clap their hands, even jump up and down.  Try it, it works!
  • Have your child teach you.  For example, have them hold up the flash cards of words or number facts.  It helps even more if you sometimes make a mistake!
  • Make lessons visual.  You can do this by drawing a picture or graphic organizer .  Children are more likely to remember a visual depiction.

In all instances, your child’s teacher is your best resource.  Ask for ideas of how you can work at home with  your child.  Find out what things teachers are doing to help your child overcome a curriculum difficulty.
