READING – Our essential question is, “What kinds of work do people do?” To help us discover the answer to the question the class will read, Pizza at Sally’s, Everybody Works, The Elves and the Shoemaker, The Lion and the Mouse, and Selling Things. In addtion the students will read the high frequency word, “and,” identify words with the beginning “m” sound, read stories, “M-m” and “I like M-m,” classify and categorize words for jobs, and learn to identify action verbs, which are words that show movement. You can help by:

  •  reviewing all high frequency words learned thus far and have your child point to them as you read books together.
  • have discussions about your job and other jobs that people do.
  • identify things in your home or outside that begin with letter “m.”

MATH – We have a Math Chapter 2 test on Tuesday, 10/18.  Study sheets were sent home on Friday. The class will begin Chapter 3 which will teach them to represent, count, and write numbers 6-9. This week the students will focus on the number 6.

RELIGION – The students will continue to do activities related to the story of Noah’s Ark.

SCIENCE – As we discuss living and non-living things we’ll also discuss the needs of living things, air, water, food, shelter, and space.

HANDWRITING – The basic strokes learned this week are vertical lines, (pulling down from the top to the bottom), and horizontal lines (sliding across from left to right.)

SOCIAL STUDIES – Our focus is on “bullying.” We will discuss what the word means and how we can help ourselves and others who may experience bullying. On Tuesday the school will participate in an anti-bullying rally.

REMINDERS

Bring fall leaves for Art class on Tuesday, 10/18, in a labelled plastic bag.

Allow your child to keep a school sweater in his/her backpack to wear in school if they are chilly. Be sure the sweater has your child’s name in it.

Kindergarten will be visiting a pumpkin farm. Further information and permission slip will be sent home on Tuesday, 10/18.

Sheets of red and yellow construction paper will be sent home with directions, so you can make  two-sided colored counters for your child’s future Math homework. Please keep these for the entire school year.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“It’s the little things we do and say that mean so much as we go our way. A kindly deed can lift a load from weary shoulders on the road.”
