Hello Fabulous Fourth Grade Families,

It was so lovely to see so many of you at Back to School night. If you were unable to attend please be on the lookout for a red folder with all the information and handouts presented. If you have any questions please feel free to reach out. I would be more than happy to answer any questions.

Below you will find what we will be doing for each subject this week:

ELA: This week we will focus our ELA on our first class book, Because of Winn-Dixie, by Kate DiCamillo, focusing on learning good reading habits such as self monitoring, and comprehension strategies. We will also be using Scholastic StoryWorks to read the short text The Shattered Land, focusing on the skill of main idea and supporting details. We will also begin our first writing unit focusing on writing a good paragraph. We will be using the RACE strategy to outline our responses.

Math: This week in Math we continue our study of Unit 1: Place Value and Whole Number Operations. Module 2 focuses on the addition and subtraction of whole numbers. We will have our first math quiz on Thursday 9-26, and a test on Friday 9-27. The quiz and test are similar, and quiz corrections can be completed to earn back points. (I will be going over the math quiz and test policies during back to school night.) Helpful handouts, videos, charts, reteach pages, and the HW can all be found on Google Classroom and are excellent resources.

Religion: This week we begin our study of the Old Testament. We will be focusing on the first section of the old testament, the major and minor prophets. As we begin to wrap-up our study of the Old Testament, please note that there will be a quiz on Tuesday 10-2. A review sheet will be completed on Tuesday. Students must know the order of books in the old testament.

Social Studies: This week in S.S. we continue our study of the geography of New York. We will begin Chapter 2- Three World Meet. We will be learning about the Algonquin and Haudenosaunee or Iroquis people.

Science: This week we will begin our first unit of science called Waves of Sound. Our driving questions are, how far can a whisper travel? Last week the students did an amazing job building their machines to throw a pom-pom, this week on Tuesday 9-24 there will be a short science vocabulary quiz. Vocabulary words and definitions are posted on Google Classroom.

Blessings,

Ms. Stainkamp
