Below you will find what we will be doing for each subject this week:

ELA: This week we will start our first class book, Because of Winn-Dixie, by Kate DiCamillo. As we read together we will be focusing on learning good reading habits such as self monitoring, and comprehension strategies. There will be a spelling test on Friday 9-20, with words pulled out of Because of Winn-Dixie.  In grammar we are learning about complete subjects and predicates. We will also be working on the skill of compare and contrast using the Wonders curriculum. We will be using the shared texts, Avalanche, A World of Change, and Earthquake. We will be working to answer the question: How do people respond to natural disasters? There will be a short comprehension test on Friday 9-20 based on Earthquake.

Math: This week in Math we continue our study of Unit 1: Place Value and Whole Number Operations. Module 1 focuses on the place value of whole numbers. We will have our first math quiz on Wednesday 9-18, and a test on 9-19. The quiz and test are similar, and quiz corrections can be completed to earn back points. (I will be going over the math quiz and test policies during back to school night.) Helpful handouts, videos, charts, reteach pages, and the HW can all be found on Google Classroom and are excellent resources.

Religion: This week we begin our study of the Old Testament. We will be focusing on the first section of the old testament, the books of poetry.

Social Studies: This week in S.S. we begin our study of the geography of New York. Our driving question is what is the difference between climate and weather?

Science: This week we will begin our first unit of science called Waves of Sound. Our driving questions are, how far can a whisper travel?

I am looking forward to seeing you all on Tuesday 9-17 at 7pm for Back to School Night at 7pm.

Blessings,

Ms. Stainkamp
