Here’s a look at a busy week ahead:

SPELLING- The new words from list 16 are: mail, chain, rain, play, day, way, took, our, hood, carry. We are starting to write sentences for our spelling words this week. We will start out slowly. The children can choose any 3 of the words on the list and write a sentence for each word. They should think of the sentence on their own and get help with spelling a new word if needed. This helps prepare them for writing more frequently on their own, especially in second grade. The sentences should be handed in by Thursday. There will be a spelling test on Friday.

PHONICS- long o words, long a: ay, ai, a_e

READING- We will read folktales this week. The children will learn about plot and sequence in a story. We will be putting words in ABC order, focusing on words that start with the same letter (they have learned that they must look at the second letter in words that start with the same letter).

GRAMMAR- irregular verbs was and were; contractions

MATH- We will finish chapter 8 about graphs, and have a test on Wednesday. They are doing well interpreting data on a graph and tally chart, and should practice subtracting when comparing more/less items on the graphs.

RELIGION- Stories about Jesus’s Miracles

SOCIAL STUDIES- American Documents

SCHOLASTIC NEWS- Young Abe Lincoln

NEWS

We have a busy week ahead. We will wear red (free non-uniform day) on Tuesday, Valentines Day, and have special snacks. Thank you to all who are contributing to our party. Please remind your child to bring in Valentine cards for his/her classmates on Monday or Tuesday. We will have a card exchange during our party.

We have been counting down to the 100th Day of School since September, and the day has come! This Wednesday we will munch on 100 cookies with the Kindergarten class, read stories, and tell them all about what it will be like for them next year in first grade! The children should bring in their 100 items in the lunch bag I sent home, by Wednesday. If anyone needs ideas for their bag. let me know and I will share what children have brought in past years.

We will continue to learn about important people during Black History month and learn about our presidents, focusing on George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.

Winter Recess is February 20th-25th. I wonder if we will get any snow??

Have a great week!
