Last week, our class observed trees, autumn leaves and learned about the letter Ll. We had fun enjoying a variety of activities using the leaves we found on our fall walk.
This week, we will learn about Turkeys! Turkeys are a classic symbol of the Thanksgiving holiday. We will take a virtual field trip to a turkey farm and learn where our favorite Thanksgiving food comes from. We will read stories about turkeys and learn about their life cycle. Math activities will include the counting fingerplays, “10 Little Turkeys” and “5 Little Turkeys.” We will review the geometric shapes with a fun “Turkey In The Hay” hide and seek game. Turkey begins with the letter Tt, so there is no better time to explore letter Tt and the sound it makes.
On Monday, we will get a special visit from the Hicksville Fire Department. They are going to teach us about fire safety and take us on a tour of the fire trucks.
During centers this week, the children will have a variety of fun play opportunities. In the sensory center, there will be a turkey feather sorting game with tweezers. Our STEM center will include turkey bird life science displays and percussion instruments for experimenting with sound. The Literacy center will have letter T activity boards and turkey books to read. The dramatic play center will be a kitchen with Thanksgiving foods to pretend to share. The art center will have a variety of art projects to create including Thanksgiving placemats, Turkey Tracks Painting, Pasta Necklaces, Turkey Towel Rolls and Paper Plate Turkeys in brown paint.
Next week is Thanksgiving! We have many exciting plans with our school community. On Wednesday, November 23rd, we have a schoolwide feast and turkey trot. School will be closed November 24-25 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. Please enjoy a happy and healthy Thanksgiving with your families!
