We have a busy week planned in fifth grade: (Remember I see all students for ELA and S.S. I also have Bible and Spelling with 5A)

Spelling: This is our first week with spelling words. They will be introduced on Monday. Test Friday.

Bible: Last week we read Frindle, by Andrew Clements. This is a fun book about a boy and the use of words. It is a good example of sticking to your beliefs while remaining respectful. Ask your child about it. We will be completing a number of writing activities concerning this book. The students seemed to enjoy it.

S.S.: Chapter 2.We will explore the chapter and complete a foldable. Test 9/24. Students will be making ‘Winter Counts’ calendars at home and in class.  They are due on 9/23. Student timelines due 9/22.

ELA: We are reading a short story titled: A Package for Mrs. Jewls. Ask your child about it. It is entertaining and comes full circle. We will be learning what makes a short story good and beginning to write our own. In grammar we will be learning about full and fragment sentences.

A few years ago I saw this poster that I think of often. It had a picture of a Bible on it and simply read:

‘Sin will keep your from this book.  This book will keep you from sin.’

It struck me as so simple, yet very profound. As I move ahead in my years, I am still taken with the truth in this simple statement. When I am feeling like I can’t fit anymore into my day, especially reading the Bible, I recall that poster. It reminds me what I know I should do. I hope this encourages you in some small way…..

Have a great week. Your children are great.                                                               Mrs. Lively
