This Week in Art

I am excited to announce that the Doodle4Google Art Contest is returning for its 15th year!  Doodle4Google is an annual art contest where students in grades K-12 get to express their creativity by drawing their very own Google Doodle in response to a prompt.  The winning Doodle will be displayed on the Google homepage for 24 hours!  This year, I’m happy to share that the prompt will be:  I am grateful for…

The Parent/Guardian Letter/Entry Form went home with your child this week explaining all the details of this exciting contest.  Even though the contest is optional I strongly encourage all K-8 students to enter.  Please visit the website https://doodles.google.com/d4g/how-it-works/ to learn more about the contest, discover how to submit and find resources as well as exciting prizes!  And, remember, the deadline for electronic submissions is March 7, 2023 11:59 pm.

Our ECC classes will finish painting their Valentine pictures in the the pointillist style of French artist G. Seurat. This week they will use their Qtips and watercolors to paint blue dots on top of their yellow dots to make the color GREEN.  Kindergarten will use brightly colored beads to create patterns on their Kenyan style African necklaces.  First Grade will learn how to make a COLLAGE with shades of RED magazine cut outs.  Let’s see how many objects they can think of that are a shade of RED! Second Grade will finish coloring in their drawings using lines and swirls of oil pastels just like the artist Vincent vanGogh did in his Starry Starry Night painting.

Our Third graders are busy making construction paper cut out collages in the style of Henry Matisse from the latter years of his art career. The Fourth Grade will tackle using chalk pastels to create beautiful sunset landscapes or seascapes.  Please make sure you have your smock. 🙂 Fifth Grade will finish up their Snowman at Night chalk pastel drawings by adding details like scarves, hats,  corncob pipes and who knows what else????

The Sixth grade will continue working on their portraiture unit while the Seventh graders will finish painting their Winter Landscapes. Eighth grade will have to think “out of the box” this week by using their fingerprints in a creative way to show an action drawing or comic strip scene.  Finally, Art Elective class students continue to amaze me with their painting on canvas skills as they are almost done with their Snoopy Winter Landscape paintings.

Keep Creating and Enjoy your Week!
