Welcome back to our ARTrageous Adventures!

All classes have been busy creating and I can’t wait to display their fabulous work!

The ECC classes made tissue paper Sun Catcher Mittens to decorate their classroom windows.  This was their culminating project after reading Jan Brett’s book The Mitten. This week we’ll start painting with rainbow colored shaving cream to create the scene of Peter walking in the snow from E. J. Keats’ book A Snowy Day.  This project is one of Mrs. Kerwin’s favorites as it captures the beautiful winter sky and the shadows in the bright white snow.

Our Kindergarten class is making a Snowman Collage using their fine motor skills to cut, color and paste carrot noses, scarves, buttons and even a snowman hat! The   First grade class is working on a drawing of snowmen frolicking in the snow doing the fun kinds of activities that children would do.  These hilarious drawings include the snowmen ice skating, swinging on a swing set, playing baseball and even having a snowball fight!  This project was inspired by the Carolyn Buchner’s book Snowmen at Night. Second Grade learned that they can make a Snowman Collage from an Aerial view.  No kidding, wait until you see these three dimensional Aerial View Snowmen decorating our hallways.  Our Third graders will be creating a winter scene of Snowy Winter Birch trees using masking tape, shading techniques, watercolors and rock salt. The rock salt mixed into the wet watercolor creates an airy textured rainbow background behind the bright white birch trees.  The students also LOVE adding iridescent snow glitter to the trees for a more realistic fresh snow look.

Fourth Grade enjoyed a lesson on architecture and learned how to make and decorate flat and peaked roof structures using construction paper, scissors and tape. I can’t wait to see how they will transform their ideas of fast food eateries, bake shops, sneaker stores and even a six story skyscraper!  The Fifth graders are finishing up their Shades of Gray drawings from before the break. I spotted a zebra, snow-covered mountain landscape, a train with bright lights coming out of a dark, black tunnel even two penguins skating on a icy lake!

Our Sixth Grade class learned about the history of American Graffiti.  They are working on creating a Tag from their name or nickname.  The Seventh graders are finishing up their Split face self portraits this week and the Eighth graders are finishing their Radial Symmetry designs as well.  Look for these wonderful masterpieces in the hallways real soon.

Students in our second trimester Art Elective class just finished their Pom Wonderful bottle snowmen.  We will start canvas painting using acrylic paints this week.  Most of the class will be painting a Snoopy Winter Day Snooze while others have decided to find a different subject for their painting….to be cont…..

Congratulations to last month’s Masterpiece of the Month Winners:  Mia Cuadra (2nd), Isabella Montanez (6th) and Izzy Davidson (8th).  We’re so proud of your creative talent!

Keep Creating!
