This Week in Art
Happy Valentine’s Day!
PrK will finish up their Valentine Heart Flowers painted with dots of watercolor! They learned that when you combine two colors of paint you can create a third, new color. This lesson was inspired by the pointillism technique used by French artist G. Seurat. Kindergarten will complete their African Tribal Necklaces by adorning them with beads, sequins and shells. Last week First Grade added texture to their hot air balloons by adding a variety of lines and patterns. This week they will glue all the pieces to the watercolor background to finish up the Mixed Media Collage. I will post pictures of these funny, colorful collages next week! Second Grade will learn about the lines and swirls paintings of Impressionist-style artist Vincent Van Gogh. We will focus on his famous work Starry Starry Night.
Our Third graders will enjoy the artwork of Surrealist Salvador Dali and will create a collage fashioned from magazine clippings. Fourth Grade will finish up their “tasty-looking” food drawings while Fifth graders complete their Optical Illusion Tunnel drawings.
Sixth graders learned about the history of Graffiti, various artists and their styles. They will practice different types of bubble lettering such as block, stencil and 3D. This lesson will culminate with the students creating a “Personal Tag” of their own. Seventh Grade started a lesson on Weaving with a cardboard loom. They will be weaving for a few weeks. Eighth Graders will be starting to work on their Profile Collages. This will include pasting images of items that describe the student’s personal life, style, hobbies, interests, wishes and goals onto his/her silhouette drawing.
Art Elective students will start building their Wood Sculptures this week.
A discussion about this year’s exciting Doodle for Google Art Contest took place in all K-8 classes this week. Parent letters and forms were sent home. Questions regarding the contest should be directed to Mrs. Kerwin at [email protected]. The deadline for submissions is March 14, 2024. I can’t wait to see what our students create. Happy Doodling!
Keep Creating!
