Happy New Year!
Cold and flu season is in full swing. Trinity Lutheran School has had some flu cases already this year. The following article contains recommendations by the CDC to help us all stay healthier.
What is influenza (also called flu)?
The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and lungs. It can cause mild to severe illness. It spreads easily from person to person
The CDC recommends a three pronged approach to fighting the flu: get vaccinated, take everyday preventative actions to curb the spread of germs and stay home if you are sick to prevent spreading the flu to others.
Signs and symptoms of flu:
People who have the flu often feel some or all of these signs and symptoms:
- • Fever* or feeling feverish/chills
- • Cough
- • Sore throat
- • Runny or stuffy nose
- • Muscle or body aches
- • Headaches
- • Fatigue (very tired)
- • Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults.Children with any of these symptoms should not be sent to school.
How flu spreads:
Most experts believe that flu viruses spread mainly by droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze or talk. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby. This is why it is important to cover your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing.
Less often, a person might also get flu by touching a surface or object that has flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, eyes or possibly their nose.
How can you tell the difference between a cold and the flu?
Because colds and flu share many symptoms, it can be difficult (or even impossible) to tell the difference between them based on symptoms alone. Your doctor can administer a special test for the flu.
What are the symptoms of the flu versus the symptoms of a cold?
In general, the flu is worse than the common cold, and symptoms such as fever, body aches, extreme tiredness, and dry cough are more common and intense. Colds are usually milder than the flu. People with colds are more likely to have a runny or stuffy nose. Colds generally do not result in serious health problems, such as pneumonia, bacterial infections, or hospitalizations.
