Welcome to Mrs. Ryan’s second grade Class Notes!
I hope all of our moms and grandmothers enjoyed their Mother’s Day last weekend. We are grateful for you all. The class enjoyed preparing for Mother’s Day by drawing pictures of their sweet moms. We hope you all enjoy the book and discover how well they know you! Lastly, we hope the zinnia seeds we planted mid April come to fruition by July and bloom beautifully for you. Plan on giving your plant lots of sunlight and a daily morning dose of water. Feel free to transplant your plant outdoors soon or in a larger pot eventually. Once they begin to flower, you should enjoy flowers throughout the summer. You can deadhead the flowers to promote future blooms.
The second grade traveled to the Jones Beach Nature Center last Wednesday and experienced a Plants and Animals program. The class, along with our chaperone Mrs. Zavala and I, took a leisurely and lovely walk out on the sand and learned about the native birds and collected various types of shells. Pollination and photosynthesis were topics our guides spoke about often. We learned how the land is protected in some areas so nature can safely live on the sand and in the grasses along the shoreline, protected from the trampling of our feet and our natural curiosities. The important message we took away from this trip to the beach was to not leave a trace, meaning leave nothing behind and take nothing from it, other than our footprints! We later enjoyed snack out on the deck in the sun under blue skies and picnicked in the courtyard for lunch once we returned back to Trinity. We all enjoyed the day!

Last week we were visited by Mr. Cuadra who so kindly shared not a book, but his career with the class. Together we learned all about his nursing job and was able to learn about and see and hold a kneecap replacement, a hip replacement, and a graft! Some children were able to experience what it felt like to be a nurse by dressing up in scrubs! We saw interesting pictures of a robotic hand that performs surgery. We also discovered how tools such as lasers, drills, screws, and hammers are used in surgery. A big thank you to Mr. Cuadra who so kindly shared his time with us!
In observance of Memorial Day, school will be closed Thursday, May 22 (Professional Development Day for teachers) through Monday, May 26. School will resume on Tuesday, May 27th.
