Dear Parents,

Welcome November! I hope everyone enjoyed Halloween and Happy Diwali to those who celebrate. We have a fun week ahead of us. We will start borrowing library books this week. The children will borrow a book every week from our classroom library on either Monday or Tuesday of that week (depending on the days they attend school). They will bring the book home to read with you and your family and then they will return the book the following Monday or Tuesday (depending on the days they attend school). They must return the book they borrowed in order to borrow another book. Every Sunday, when we post the focus wall and blog, we will post the list of books that need to be returned. Additionally, this month we are introducing Mystery Readers. A sign up sheet will be posted on ClassDojo at the start of every month with the dates for a mystery reader. Parents and grandparents are welcome to sign up for a date and join us. There will be many opportunities to be a mystery reader starting in November and going through June.

This week we will learn the letter “L” for leaf. The children will learn how to recognize, sound out, and trace the letter “L.” We will read “The Leaf Man” and go on a leaf hunt. We will also work on some fun leaf crafts. The children will work on a Scholastic Reader about leaves. We will learn about the color green, the triangle shape, and wrap up our dot numbers with the number 5. During centers, the children will continue to practice tracing and cutting scrap paper to strengthen their cutting skills. We will introduce a new fall sensory bin filled with leaves, acorns, and other fall items.

Additionally, this week we will learn about voting in an election. The children will have the opportunity to vote for the class snack to illustrate how voting works. We will also learn about Veteran’s Day. The children will make cards for veterans which will be donated to the VA hospital at the end of the week for veterans to take on the 11th. On Tuesday, Dev’s parents will join us in class to teach the children all about Diwali, the Festival of Lights, one of India’s most widely celebrated holidays.

We briefly touched on the Birth of Moses last week so this week we will finish it up and talk about the Giving of the Law. We will also learn a new prayer this month:

Thank You God
Thank you God for this new day,
in my school to work and pray.
Please be with me all day long,
in every story, game and song.
May all the happy things we do,
Make you, our Father, happy too.
