Hello, everyone. I hope you are all enjoying our long weekend for Columbus/Leif Erikson/Indigenous Peoples Day. Here are the updates for this week.

6th Religion

This week we will continue studying the family line of Abraham and Isaac. We will learn about Jacob escaping to his Uncle Laban, and then being swindled by him. Then, we will learn about Jacob’s son, Joseph, being sold into slavery in Egypt by his brothers, and how God used this awful circumstance to save his family. Lastly, we will jump over to the book of Job, as this book takes place around the time of Jacob. He suffered many tragedies but never lost his faith in God. There is no memory verse this week.

6th Social Studies

In social studies, we are continuing our study of Mesopotamia, and looking at the empires of Babylon, Assyria, and Persia- all places we will hear about in upcoming religion lessons. Next week we will study the settlement of Israel by the Hebrew people. This unit will hopefully provide context for the awful war currently being fought in Israel.

7th Religion

This week in religion we will continue to focus on God’s Word, especially how we can learn from it and how we can apply God’s Word to our lives. We will specifically study God’s promise to Abram and the minor prophets of the Old Testament. There is no memory quiz this week.

7th Social Studies

In social studies we are studying the settlement of Dutch, French, and the first English colonies in North America. We will focus on the economic motivations, the social ramifications, and the early political influences on the U.S. government. On Friday, the students will begin their topic 2 research projects which will focus on debunking myths of early colonial history and learning about the truth of colonial life for the Europeans, Africans, and American Indians.

8th Religion

This week we will study the story of Isaac blessing his son Jacob, and then the story of Joseph being sold into slavery in Egypt by his brothers. In both of these stories we see how God can take awful circumstances and use them for good. There is no memory quiz this week, but the students should be working on their Trimester 1 Project: Tough Times Toolkit. They received the outline last week, and they will present their projects on Tuesday, October 17th. The outline is posted on the Google Classroom.

8th Social Studies

This week will be quite a whirlwind for eighth grade. We will be working our way through Reconstruction, and most likely finishing the chapter on Friday. If we finish on Friday, the test on Topic 9 will be on Thursday, October 19th. Then, the students will be working on research projects about each of the conspirators involved in Abraham Lincoln’s assassination.
