Last week, we completed our unit of study on ice. This week we will study an important community helper – the post office. The children will learn about writing, weighing, sorting and counting as they get their cards and letters ready to post in our post office dramatic play center. The children will learn about the postal system and about how we send and receive mail. We will take a virtual field trip to a post office and visit our own mail area and office manager here at Trinity. We will even mail home our own handmade letters.
In Literacy this week, we will be exploring the letter Qq and developing phonemic awareness for its sound. We will discover more about positional words as we complete the emergent reader, “Where’s The Heart?” We will enjoy many stories about both hearts and the postal system. We will also write our own letters and practice writing our names.
Math activities this week include creating a variety of geometric shapes using candy hearts, playing a group counting envelopes game and small group conversation hearts graphing games.
Q is for question! For a science project this week, we will ask the question, “What happens to candy hearts in different liquids?” We will place candy hearts in a variety of liquids and predict, observe and record the changes that we see. We will also learn about groundhogs and the significance of Groundhog’s Day. Will the groundhog predict an early spring or more winter? We will find out!
There are a variety of fine motor activities to enjoy this week! We will practice cutting with scissors and create our own mailbags, valentines mailboxes, postcards, groundhog crafts and queen of hearts cards.
Next week, we will be celebrating Valentine’s Day in class with a Valentine’s Day Tea Party. We will learn more about hearts, love and manners. We will also be making some special Valentine’s Day crafts to take home. A Tea Party sign up sheet will be posted on class dojo.
