Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to one and all! I hope that we all had a restful, happy, and healthy break. Now we are back in full swing for the second half of the school year. Here are the updates for this week.

6th Religion

In religion this week, we will begin studying the work of Samuel and again, how God chooses unlikely people to do His work. We will focus particularly on God calling Samuel to service as a child. Then, we will learn a simple prayer structure based on the teachings in 1 Samuel. Lastly we will study Samuel anointing Saul to be the first king of Israel. There is no memory verse this week.

6th Social Studies

This week we will begin a fresh, new unit on Ancient China. We will focus on the culture, early dynasties, and the various philosophies that emerged, such as Daoism and Confucianism.

7th Religion

Before Christmas, we started a series of lessons focusing on the work of Martin Luther, and we will continue this week. These lessons will parallel the Biblical themes of Solomon’s wisdom and Jesus’ Disciples. There is no memory verse this week.

7th Social Studies

Before Christmas we wrapped up the Revolutionary War Era, and this week we will begin studying the early days of the United States and the gradual move from the Articles of Confederation to our current Constitution.

8th Religion

This week we will continue our study of the period of the Judges by studying the life and (poor) decisions of Samson. Then we will study the Book of Ruth and learn from the strength and faith of Naomi, Ruth, and Boaz. Both of these topics show how God takes seemingly awful circumstances and uses them for good. There is no memory verse this week.

8th Social Studies

Before Christmas, we started Topic 11: The Progressive Era, and this week we will continue this chapter. We will study the men known as the Progressive Presidents- Taft, T. Roosevelt, and Wilson. Then, we will study early civil rights leaders such as Booker T. Washington and W. E. B. DuBois, and leaders among the women’s suffrage movement. The students will have their test on Topic 11 next Friday, January 13th.
