We had a great week learning about farm animals.  The children made many fun animal crafts, including pigs, cows, and sheep. We learned about the different animals and what life would be like to live on a farm.  We sang fun animal songs and rhymes.

Next week we will begin our science unit on pumpkins.  Since pumpkin starts with the letter Pp, we will learn the sound it makes and other words that start with that letter.  We will learn how pumpkins grow on a vine and when they get bigger, they turn orange.  We will read the books, “Five Little Pumpkins” by Dan Yaccarino, and “Pumpkin Jack” by Will Hubbell.  The children will dissect a pumpkin and learn about all the parts that make up a pumpkin.  They will use their senses to determine the shape, feel, and smell of the pumpkin.

For our math lesson this week, we will make a craft while counting the number of pumpkin seeds we use.  The children will explore counting, number identification, and one-to-one correspondence with this pumpkin seed activity.  We will be singing the rhyme, “Five Little Pumpkins” and make our own craft of five pumpkins sitting on a fence.  This rhyme is so much more than just a fun song, but it’s also a valuable teaching tool that can help your child develop math skills such as number sense.

For Jesus Time, we will talk about how God created pumpkins.  We will sing the songs, “Jesus’ Love is Bubbling Over” and “My God is so Great.”
