Last week we learned about the animals that live on a farm. This week we will explore a pumpkin farm. Pumpkins are usually ready to harvest in the middle of fall, which makes exploring pumpkins seasonally relevant. Farms are opening up for trips to the pumpkin patch and pumpkins and pumpkin spice are everywhere! This week we will transform our classroom into a pumpkin patch to learn more about pumpkins.
We will explore how and where pumpkins grow. With our five senses, we will explore how they look, feel, smell, taste and sound? We will explore different types of pumpkins and their color, size and texture. We will also investigate whether they sink or float. How much pumpkins weigh and how they each measure up. We will learn more about what foods can be made from pumpkins. We will even get to measure, mix and bake up our own pumpkin spice bread to enjoy! Pumpkins begin with Pp, so we will also discuss letter Pp and the sound it makes and other words that begin with Pp.
This week we will enjoy pumpkin themed learning centers! Our sensory table is filled with gourds, small orange and green natural materials, measuring scoops and a scale to weigh it all with. The STEM center will have pumpkins of various sizes to explore and mirror blocks. The Literacy area will include a variety of pumpkin stories and letter P activities because pumpkin begins with P! Our dramatic play area will become a small pumpkin kitchen for the kids to pretend they are baking up some fall flavors. We will also have a daily pumpkin themed art projects to complete in the art center. It should be a fun week filled with pumpkin spice!!
