Hello, everyone! January has really flown by, and I cannot believe we are already approaching February. February is a month full of holidays and remembrances, so while it is a short month, we will be very busy over the next few weeks. Here are the updates for this week.

6th Religion

Last week we studied the life and example of King David, and this week we will be studying his son, Solomon, and grandson, Rehoboam. We will study the construction of Solomon’s Temple, and then learn about the mistakes of Rehoboam which caused the kingdom to be split.

6th Social Studies

This week we will be studying the Han dynasty of China and their achievements. This is a highly appropriate unit for this week, as we will also be celebrating Lunar New Year on Tuesday, February 1st. Many of the traditions of Lunar New Year were developed during the Han dynasty in Ancient China. This week we will also finish our unit on Early China, and the test will be next Wednesday, February 9th. After we complete our study of China, the students will be doing research projects on Ancient African Kings and their achievements.

7th Social Studies

In seventh grade social studies, we are studying the Constitution and the rights and responsibilities of U.S. citizens. We will finish the chapter this week, and the test will be on Wednesday, February 9th. After the test, the students will work on research projects on African Americans government officials, both elected and appointed. The driving question of the project will be about the importance of citizens being actively engaged in our nation and its policies.

8th Social Studies

This week we are finishing up our study of the Progressive Era. We will study the three “Progressive Presidents”, the social justice movement of the early 1900s, and how the American culture was changing. The chapter test will be next Friday, February11. Next, the students will build on what they have learned about American culture, and they will learn about the Harlem Renaissance, and will do research projects on African American writers, musicians, and actors from the first half of the 20th century.

8th Religion

Last week we talked about God calling Samuel to his vocations as a prophet, judge, and priest. This week the students are completing projects on how they too can serve God in a future career/vocation. They will present on Friday.
