Reading Language Arts-Spelling and Reading Test Friday 1/21
We will read Squirrel’s New Year’s Resolution, a fictional story, and explore the elements of a story (setting, characters, plot, resolution)
Spelling Words include the days of the week and the months of the year
Vocabulary words discussed this week from the story include actions, bank, borders, creek, diner, garden, improve, order, resolution, scampered, stake, trampoline
Grammar Goal: review of nouns and verbs
Writer’s Workshop: We continue writing sentences, understanding the importance of punctuation, capitalization and proofreading while completing our thank you letters and writing a summary of this week’s story.

Keys to legibility are size, shape, spacing and slant! Handwriting is important and strengthens our fine motor skills! Neatness counts!

Stories for the week include Jesus is Baptized, The Boy Jesus in the Temple, and Jesus Calls His Disciples

Important Information and News:
Second graders will become very busy during these next few winter months! We will be working hard on mastering addition and subtraction facts, polishing a wide range of writing skills as we become authors, and learning cursive, to name a few!
At home, children should be practicing their math addition facts. As we begin adding double digits, knowing our basic facts will make adding larger numbers much easier! Please use flash cards or simply ask simple fact questions whenever you have a minute or two to practice. Make it fun!
We are writing in our journals nightly. Please encourage as much independence as possible. Reinforce rereading sentences to proofread. Does/Do my sentence(s) make sense? Did I add punctuation and capital letters where necessary? Have I written at least 3 sentences to answer the prompt? Have I reviewed and checked my “checklist?”
If your son or daughter has a hard time completing homework, please let me know so I can reinforce the concept in school the following day. Thank you!

• Please have a conversation with your son/daughter if they need a refreshment of supplies such as crayons, colored pencils, regular pencils, glue sticks….
