Week 2

We have had a great start, and we are beginning to establish our routines. It is a wonderful class and I look forward to a fantastic school year. Below is a brief synopsis on what we will be covering this week.
ELA: We will be reading A Fine, Fine School by Sharon Creech.We will be working on story structure and analyzing illustrations. Our target strategy is summarization. In phonics we will be focusing on short vowel a,e,i,o, and words with the VCCV (vowel consonant consonant vowel) pattern. The vocabulary words this week include principal, soared, strolled, worried, proud, announced, fine, and certainly. The vocabulary strategy we are working on is context clues. In grammar, we will be focusing on simple sentences (identifying both subjects and predicates). Our spelling words are crop, plan, thing, smell, shut, sticky, spent, lunch, pumpkin, clock, gift, class, skip, swing, next, hug, hospital, and fantastic. Our challenge words are principal and announced.
Religion: The students are learning who is God and how can we learn about him.
Social Studies: We are reading and talking about September 11th. We will be writing letters in our writing journals thanking first responders. We are working on geography skills and beginning our unit on Mexico. The students will locate Mexico on the map.They will be able to describe where it is geographically located, as well as the different types of land formation.. They will learn the following vocabulary words: geography, land formation, plains, and plateau.
Math: We are focusing on strategies to add three-digit numbers. We will be estimating to ensure that our answers are reasonable. We will be focusing on the following vocabulary words: round, compatible numbers, estimate, and Associate Property of Addition. Here is a link to the vocabulary words.
