READING- The essential question is, “What is the same about all families?” Our activities this week will center around answering that question. We’ll read the stories, Building with Dad, What Makes a Family? See What We Can Do,We Can Make It and poems about families. The class will read the high frequency word, “I” and practice letter names and sounds for “k-l-m-n-o”. We’ll also focus on rhyming words, reading with expression, classifying and categorizing family words, identifying a main idea, nouns for people, and the correct writing of a name. You can help by having a discussion about your family and things families do together.

MATH- The students will explore different ways to make 5, ordering numbers 1-5, and identifying, writing and understanding the value of 0, zero. We will finish chapter 1 on Monday and have our first chapter test on Tuesday, Oct.4th. You will receive further information on helping your child prepare for the test.

SOCIAL STUDIES- The class will hear the story of Johnny Appleseed and his importance to the growth and planting of apple trees in our country. We will also be discussing the character trait, “respect.”

RELIGION- Respect will also be “tied into” our lesson on God creating people.

SCIENCE- Our focus is on experiencing apples through the use of our five senses. Towards the end of the week we’ll taste three different types of apples and graph each child’s favorite apple choice.

JOURNEL- Using our high frequency word “I” and our apple experience, the students will write the sentence, “I like apples!” and draw a picture to depict what they wrote.
