Week 4

It was wonderful seeing all of you at Back to School night. I truly appreciate all the support I receive. The children benefit most when there is a strong home/school connection.
Scholastic book orders forms went home last week. They are due on Tuesday, September 27th. You can always order books on line by going to Scholastic.com/readingclub and using our classrooom code GZBYH.
Social Studies:We are studying Mexico and our first test will be on pages 12-19. Students will be able to describe where Mexico is geographically located, the different types of land formation, the plants and animals, as well as what it is like living in different climates. They will learn the following vocabulary words: geography, land formation, plains, plateau, volcano, rain forest, and climate. Last Friday we created index cards to help review the vocabulary. We are having a test on this on Wednesday, September 28th. Thursday, September 29 (We had 2 fire drills on Monday, and that set us back one day.)
Math: We are having our first chapter test on Friday, September 30th. It will cover addition and subtraction. We will be reviewing in class, and I will have extra help on Friday morning at 7:45.
ELA: Our spelling words this week are spoke, mile, save, excuse, come, invite, cube, price, erase, ripe, broke, flame, life, rule, these, those, surprise, and decide. We are reading The Trial of Cardigan Jones. We will be discussing why the courts are an important part of government. The vocabulary words are trial, jury, convince, guilty, pointed, honest, murmur, and stand.The target skills we are working on are conclusions and author’s word choice. We are also focusing on the target strategies infer/predict. Our writing will focus on dialogue and its purpose. For grammar, we are identifying different kinds of sentences: command, exclamation, statement, and questions. We will have a comprehension and vocabulary test on Monday, October 3rd..
Science: We are focusing on the main parts of the plants, and why they need leaves, roots and stems.
Religion: We are studying who is God and what is the Bible. Our first religion memory test is this week. It will be on John 15:12.
