Greetings! While February is the shortest month of the year, there are still many events, observances, and holidays that that take place this month. The short list includes Black History Month, President’s Day, Valentines Day, Mardi Gras, and Ash Wednesday- all of which will be observed at Trinity. However, even with the excitement of the month to come, there is still work to be done.

8th Social Studies

In eighth grade social studies, the students are learning about how the United States emerged as a major world power at the turn of the 20th century. George Washington encouraged the nation to adopt a policy of isolationism, but as time progressed, leaders began to look outward for new raw materials and trade opportunities, which led to political and military intervention. This week the students will learn about the Spanish American War and they will do an activity on how journalism and the media can influence military policy.

7th Social Studies

In seventh grade, we are fully immersed in the Revolutionary War. The students have especially enjoyed learning the truth behind certain historical myths(lies)about the people and events involved, such as Washington crossing the Delaware- the famous painting is totally inaccurate. This week the students will learn about the Battle of Saratoga, and how this helped the U.S. gain recognition as a nation and helped us earn our first allies. The students will then learn about how women, African Americans, and Native Americans contributed to the war effort. They will also learn about the early days of the U.S. Navy.

8th Pre- Algebra

This week the students will review each unit of study in preparation for the midterm exam that will be given on February 10-11. The students will receive packets that contain step-by-step notes as well as practice problems. Modules 1 through 7 will be covered in the packets.

8th Religion/SEL

In Religion, the students are learning about Israel’s last judge, Samuel and their first king, Saul. The students wrote question based on 1 Samuel 3, in which God calls Samuel, and they will play a quiz game using these questions. They will also focus on listening to God and trusting Him. To help enrich the curriculum, we are also using materials from Overcoming Obstacles. This week, we are looking at organization and being a good steward of the time and gifts God has given us. The memory verse for this week is 1 Peter 2:9, which is on page 63 of the student book. This passage is traditionally read at baptisms, and is a wonderful reminder of how much God transforms His people.
