Week 2 – September 9, 2019 – updated to reflect change in ELA Tests Dates

“Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible.” – Dalai Lama

We have had a great start, and we are beginning to establish our routines.  It is a wonderful class and I look forward to a fantastic school year. Below is a brief synopsis on what we will be covering this week. We will be going slowly in the beginning of the year, and gradually we will pick up the pace.

Back to School Night is next Tuesday, September 17th at 7:00pm. Please make every effort to attend.

Scholastic book order forms are going home on Tuesday. They are due back by Thursday, September 19th. You can always order books online by going to Scholastic.com/readingclub  and using our classrooom code GZBYH. Should you choose to order books online, I believe that your child will be entitled to a free book valued at $5.00 (or less). Remember our due date is September 19th.

ELA:

Our anchor text is  A Fine, Fine School by Sharon Creech.

We will be working on story structure and analyzing illustrations. Our target strategy is summarization. In phonics we will be focusing on short vowel a,e,i,o, and words with the VCCV (vowel consonant consonant vowel) pattern. The vocabulary words this week include principal, soared, strolled, worried, proud, announced, fine, and certainly. The vocabulary strategy we are working on is context clues. In grammar, we will be focusing on simple sentences (identifying both subjects and predicates). Our spelling words are crop, plan, thing, smell, shut, sticky, spent, lunch, pumpkin, clock, gift, class, skip, swing, next, hug, hospital, and fantastic.  Our challenge words are principal and announced.

Religion: The students are learning who is God and how can we learn about him.

Social Studies: We are reading and talking about September 11th.  We are working on geography skills and beginning our unit on Mexico. The students will locate Mexico on a map and globe.

Math: We are focusing on strategies to add three-digit numbers. We will be estimating to ensure that our answers are reasonable. We will be focusing on the following vocabulary words: round, compatible numbers, estimate, and Associative Property of Addition. Here is a link to the vocabulary words.
