Week 3, September 19, 2016

We are off to a great start. I am truly enjoying getting to know all the students in the class. W have Back to School night on Thursday night. Please make every effort to attend as I will be going over important information. I feel confident that we are going to have a fabulous year.
I will be sending home completed work folders on Tuesdays. Please sign them, remove the papers, and send them back to school on Wednesdays.
Scholastic book orders forms are going home this week. They are due on Tuesday, September 27th. You can always order books on line by going to Scholastic.com/readingclub and using our classrooom code GZBYH.
Science: We are focusing on the main parts of the plants, and why they need leaves roots and stems.
Math: We are continuing to work addition strategies for 3-digit numbers. On Tuesday we are having a quiz that will cover vocabulary, adding odd and even numbers, using compatible numbers to estimate sums, and summing 2- and 3- digit numbers. On Wednesday, we begin our focus on subtraction. We are having our first chapter test on Thursday, September 29th.
Religion: We are studying who is God and what is the Bible.
Social Studies: We are beginning our unit on Mexico. The students will locate Mexico on the map.They will be able to describe where it is geographically located, the different types of land formation, the plants and animals, as well as what it is like living in different climates. They will learn the following vocabulary words: geography, land formation, plains, plateau, volcano, rain forest, and climate. We are having a test on this on Tuesday, September 27th.
ELA: We will be working on story structure and analyzing illustrations. Our target strategy is summarization. In phonics we will be focusing on short vowel a,e,i,o, and words with the VCCV (vowel consonant consonant vowel) pattern. The vocabulary strategy we are working on is context clues. We are going to begin working in our vocabulary and handwriting books this week. The spelling words for the week are allow, bitter, common, faint, firm, force, goal, patient, prefer, and trace. In addition to these words, students have also been given 5 student specific words.
