Second Grade – Week of September 15, 2025 – By Mrs. Nekota for Mrs. Ryan

We are looking forward to a week of friendship and development in the second grade. What an outstanding group of students! I hope that all parents are planning on attending Back to School Night this Tuesday, September 16, 2025, at 7:00 P.M. to learn more about our school and the program for second graders.

This week, we will be

  • Exploring the power of prayer and the gift of encouragement
  • Reflecting on how God tested Abraham, the lives of Isaac and Rebekah, and the return home of Jacob as recorded in Genesis
  • Following handwriting models and guidelines as we write the letters Ff, Gg, Jj, Qq, Uu, Ss, Bb, Pp, Rr, and Nn
  • Identifying the components of a complete sentence and including them in sentences of our own making
  • Distinguishing between statements and questions
  • Reinforcing our knowledge of short vowel sounds and exploring plural nouns and high-frequency words
  • Immersing ourselves in Lessons 1 and 2 of Week 1 in the Wonders reading and writing program through shared and decodable/independent reading opportunities; listening comprehension activities; using word context, inflectional endings, and related words to promote vocabulary expansion; visualization; structural analysis that involves identifying beginning, middle, end, characters, setting, and events of/in what we read; and facilitating fluency and appropriate intonation
  • Completing Lessons 6-7 and a Review of Module 1, Fluency for Addition and Subtraction Within 20, and Lessons 1-2 of Module 2, Equal Groups, including using ten facts, adding three numbers, and identifying even and odd numbers, in our math books and related supplementary materials
  • Continuing with our study of families: different kinds, past and present, and history
  • Exploring the animal world through categorization and classification activities, including learning more about owls via Scholastic News

Read-alouds will include the following:

  • What Is Science?
  • What Happens When Children Pray?
  • Our Class Is a Family
  • What Makes a Family?
  • What Happens When I Talk to God?
  • I’m Sorry

Specials will include Library, Art, Critters, PE, Spanish, Music, and Computer. We will be attending Chapel on Wednesday. Your child will be provided with an offering envelope on Tuesday to take home.

May our precious Lord bless our week together,

Mrs. Nekota
