Hello to one and all! I cannot believe that we are already in October- the year is flying by. This week both 6th and 8th grade have social studies chapter tests, so we have a lot to accomplish over the next few days. Here are the details:

6th Religion

This week we will focus primarily on the life of Isaac, Abraham’s son. We will learn about his marriage to Rebekah and his sons, Jacob and Esau. The memory quiz on Thursday will be on Psalm 121:8.

6th Social Studies

On Tuesday, the students will take their test on Chapter 2. We went over the study guide and they made corrections as we went along. We will play Jeopardy on Monday to review even more. On Wednesday, we will begin studying ancient Mesopotamia, which will correspond with the people we are studying in religion.

7th Social Studies

Last week, we focused primarily on the Spanish conquest of North and South America. This week, we will be learning about other European countries starting to compete for colonies in North America. We will focus on the social, political, and economic causes and effects of colonization. At the end of this week, they will work on a project in which they will write and act out mock interviews with various explorers. They will have their chapter test next Friday, October 16th. I will post the review in my next blog.

8th Social Studies

Eighth grade will be wrapping up the Civil War this week with their chapter test on Wednesday. This will actually cover part of chapter 14, chapter 15, as well as the videos and handouts we worked on in class. We will go over the study guide on Monday and play Jeopardy on Tuesday. On Thursday, we will get into the topic of Reconstruction following the Civil War. We have already discussed how this would have gone very differently if Lincoln had not been assassinated, so I am very much looking forward to our class discussions with this unit.

8th Religion

Much like sixth grade, eighth grade is also focusing on the life of Isaac and his children this week. Family dynamics, sibling rivalry, and trusting God are the major themes this week. The memory quiz on Friday will be on Jeremiah 29:11.
