Welcome to Second Grade!

Our first week of school is a time of acclimation. New procedures, new routines, new faces, new books! In order to adjust to everything new around us, we are giving time for readjustment in order to make the transition as smooth as possible while we slowly get acquainted with one another. In these first days, we are laying the foundation for a strong year ahead, establishing rules and setting the tone for our classroom “community” where we are a team who works together, and where everyone is valued and loved! There will be some exciting “firsts” in second grade. For example, in second grade, we have “planners” to write down our homework assignments in. We will learn cursive this year. Independence will be encouraged and fostered. It will be a year of growth, you can be certain! So, we are looking forward to a bright new year ahead. I thank all parents and families for your support. Together, I look forward to working with you all as partners for your little ones as they grow and learn here at Trinity.

Here’s a glimpse of what will be happening during our first full week in second grade.

Reading/Language Arts

We will enjoy the realistic fictional story,  Henry and Mudge

Our Phonics Focus will be on short a and i vowel sounds as well as CVC syllable patterns

Our Grammar Goals will be to understand sentence subject and predicate

Our week’s Vocabulary Strategy will be putting words in alphabetical order

Spelling Words: sad, fix, dig, rip, jam, kit, glad, mask, list, as, win, his, flat, if, sandwich, picnic

There will be a “practice” Spelling Test at the end of the week

Math

We begin Chapter 1 practicing with manipulatives as we count with ten frames and counters which will help us understand the difference between odd and even numbers and build upon our understanding of place value and expanded form of numbers

Handwriting

We will begin manuscript in our handwriting books

Religion

This week we will listen to daily devotions and discuss what our “vocation” is as a second grade student, a son/daughter, a friend… We will speak of God’s abundant love and how we can share it with others. We will also focus on letting our “adornments” be more internal rather than external as 1 Peter 3:3-4 tells us, “but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious.”  On Wednesday we will “attend” chapel on Zoom from our classroom!

A few announcements…

Back to School Night will be next Tuesday evening  9/22 via Zoom (K-5). More details to follow!

If you would like your son/daughter to buy pizza for Friday’s lunch please return the green envelope by Thursday morning,  labeled with your child’s name and be sure to include the exact cash amount due.

I believe most supplies for the children are in. Thank you so much!

God bless our week ahead.

Mrs. Antonia Ryan

Dear God,

I thank you for the week that is ahead. I know that you will be with me every step of the way. Please give me strength, wisdom and guidance. Help me to be a blessing to others as you are to me.

Amen.
